When we started Missionheart more than two decades ago, running a drop in was unusual. Over the years, there have been more and more spaces provided for people to obtain food and services here in the city. Our primary call is to God, and His plans for those He calls to Himself. We love serving our people, looking after their immediate needs such as a meal, or something to keep them warm. However, it is the one on one conversations with our people which really help build relationship – relationship where we can earn the blessing of sharing our hope in Jesus. With this is mind we have decided to experiment with the way we connect with our people.
So, on Tuesdays and Fridays we are running Appointed. This is a team of people who pray and are willing to take risks with God. We spent the first 4 weeks of Appointed meeting together to pray and worship God. We have now started coming together to pray and ask God what He would have us do – and then we have a go at doing what we felt/saw/heard during the prayer time. God is training us in how He wants us to operate. We have found that the parable of the 99 sheep and the 1 is very true of how God operates. Our team has had the opportunity to bless isolated people, people who are only in Canberra for that day, and people who really needed a listening ear. We have waled around and had amazing conversations where we prayed for healing – and saw it, where we were called to pray for the city up on a hill, and we have spent time out and about, only to come back to the office at just the right moment to bless someone with food and a blanket for that night who otherwise would have gone hungry and cold. The way God uses our time is never the same twice.
